I first started DJ'ing years ago in New Orleans with a close friend, who had a massive collection of over 10,000 45 RPM records. We worked our first gig at the Parkway Tavern on Wednesday nights and grew over the years to be popular as the Oldies Professor, even guest appearing on WTIX AM with Bob Walker. I DJ'd Thursday nights at Bruno's Tavern in Uptown New Orleans, the Bengal Lounge in Metairie Fat City on Friday and Saturday nights, Frankie and Johnny's in Uptown on Saturday nights, and many private parties and weddings over the years. One our most memorable gigs was to play the breaks at Bobby's Place. Artists such as Irma Thomas were the headliners, and we kept the crowd moving between sets. I met so many R&B artists from the 50's and 60's.
Fast forward "a few years", friends encouraged me to get back into the business. It's like riding a bike, the technology has changed, but the basic skills are the same. Music has always been my passion, and DJ'ing is a thrill to share and connect with my audience.
My vibe is Motown, Funk, Disco, R&B, Philly Soul, Classic Rock, Pop, Retro Dance, and Alternative Rock.
I specialize in 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's, but mix selections from all decades, including current, popular hits. My owned collection is over 3,400 song. I have a deep collection of New Orleans Mardi Gras and R&B artists tunes.
My format is to "dance through the decades". Starting with a range of decades, I pick 2 selections from each each, then settle into the decades most familiar to the crowd.
Many DJs will say they have access to 1000's songs. That's true through online subscription services. The question is what songs and genres does the DJ "know", and does that meet the expectations of you and your guests?
As a customer, you just want a fantastic sound experience. I've made the investment in a state of the art, planar speaker system (Electro Voice Evolve-50). These systems fill a space with high clarity sound without blowing out the crowd. My single system can handle a space with 100-150 people. Consider that it's not the size of the space, but the number of people that matters the most.
